About this Library

Approximately 65% of US households—nearly 80 million homes—have animals as pets. Community pharmacies are filling more and more prescriptions for pets, and many pharmacies actively solicit prescriptions for animals. Pharmacy technicians are a large part of this shift in veterinary pharmaceutical care.

Pharmacy technicians are now present in veterinary animal hospitals, animal clinics, and university veterinary teaching hospitals. The pharmacy technician’s roles are varied and may include medication-dispensing assistance (eg, labeling, pricing, data entry, and nonsterile compounding) for appointment and inpatient animals and for phone/email/walk-in requests and surgeries.

Important roles and key responsibilities also include:

  • Client communication in or outside of the clinical or hospital setting (eg, calling clients to answer any medication questions or to let them know when medications are ready)
  • Drug delivery for inpatient fills to patient care areas, assistance with veterinary pharmaceuticals and supplies, and inventory and stock management (ie, ordering, maintaining, and estimating demand for pharmaceutical inventories)
  • Assistance with maintaining pharmacy files and records, as required by state and federal law and by pharmacy policies and procedures

This 22-credit certificate program provides a comprehensive immersion in the most important and relevant aspects of veterinary pharmacy. Pharmacy technicians who complete all 10 cutting-edge modules will gain a working knowledge of key topics such as:

  • Anatomical and physiological considerations in non-human patients
  • Toxicology in non-human patients
  • Legal and regulatory considerations in veterinary pharmacy practice
  • Drug information resources for veterinary pharmacy
  • Indications, mechanisms of action, dosing, adverse effects, and safety profiles for the top 30 veterinary drugs
  • Compounding prescriptions for animal patients

All of the modules were written by a board-certified veterinary pharmacist with more than three decades of experience in a veterinary teaching hospital.
