Disclaimer

The content for this activity was developed independently of the commercial supporters. All materials are included with permission. The opinions expressed are those of the faculty and are not to be construed as those of the grantor.

This educational activity was planned and produced in accordance with the ACCME Accreditation Criteria, Policies, and Standards for Commercial Support, as well as the ACPE Accreditation Standards for Continuing Pharmacy Education. Recommendations involving clinical medicine in a continuing medical education (CME/CE/CPE) activity must be based on evidence that is accepted within the profession of medicine as adequate justification for their indications and contraindications in the care of patients. All scientific research referred to, reported, or used in CME/CE/CPE in support or justification of a patient care recommendation must conform to the generally accepted standards of experimental design, data collection, and analysis.

This CME/CE/CPE activity might describe the off-label, investigational, or experimental use of medications and/or devices that may exceed their FDA-approved labeling. Physicians should consult the current manufacturers' prescribing information for these products. Purdue University College of Pharmacy requires the speaker to disclose that a product is not labeled for the use under discussion.

TARGET AUDIENCE

This activity is intended for pharmacists, physicians, and other clinicians involved in the treatment of patients with PAH.

Activity Purpose

Therapeutic selection and management in PAH are intertwined with differential diagnostics, disease classification, and risk stratification. If the wrong disease classification/risk stratification is made at the incorrect time, inappropriate therapy is often offered, resulting in poor clinical outcomes. Managed care pharmacists must be prepared to update formularies and related dispensing/management protocols to improve outcomes and manage the high costs associated with unnecessary hospitalizations.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this program, participants should be better able to:

  • Discuss the role of evidence-based PAH diagnostics and disease classification in therapeutic selection and related formulary decision making.
  • List specialty pharmacy best practices and related formulary protocols for improving suboptimal PAH therapeutics and outcomes.
  • Describe administrative and/or medical-coding barriers which may impede timely patient access to appropriate PAH therapies.
  • Discuss the role of initial PAH combination therapy in reducing overall healthcare utilization costs in PAH patients.
  • Evaluate novel and emerging PAH therapies/devices and their role in related PAH utilization management.

Method of Participation

This activity will take approximately 60 minutes to complete. To receive credit, participants are required to complete the pretest, view the online activity and complete the posttest and evaluation. To receive credit, 80% must be achieved on the posttest. There is no fee to participate in the activity or for the generation of the certificate.
